Eugene Count 2024 Report
On Saturday July 6, 2024, the Eugene Butterfly Count was held on the hottest day we have ever experienced in 34 years of this count. We started at 9 am when it was 75 degrees and ended at 2:30 pm when it was almost 100 degrees. Sixteen people participated. Sharon Blick led a group to the South hills, Jim Mitchell led a group to the Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, Lori Humphreys and Sue Anderson led a group to Buford Park East and LCC, and Rick Ahrens led a group to the West Eugene Wetlands. We also had 2 Garden Watchers who counted in Alton Baker Park and North Eugene. We want to give a shout-out to Dan van den Broek and Candace Larson for climbing Spencer Butte when temps were in the high 90s and finding 8 species up there, including 2 species found nowhere else! Our results this year were odd compared to previous years. Common Ringlets and Western Tiger Swallowtails, which are normally two of our most common species, were way down this year, while Eastern Tailed Blues and Mylitta Crescents were way up. Overall, we counted 368 butterflies of 23 species, which is a bit higher than the average of the last 10 years. See the files below for more information.
